Top loader Washer, clogged fabric softener dispenser
by kirylyn ([info]kirylyn)

frustrated

current mood: frustrated

I have a top loading washing machine that the fabric softener dispenser (?) on the center spindle is coming off and its clogged with fabric softener. SOME gets dispensed but not all of it and it keeps building up.

I already tried running the wash empty to see if that would remove the build-up but no joy.

its long out of warranty and I really don't have the funds to replace it.

what are my options to try to get rid of the build-up??

Thanks!!

current mood: pessimistic

Well, things went from bad to worse.

After calling all our neighbors within a couple miles, we found out the kitten didn't belong to anyone around here. Meanwhile, what had begun as a sweet kitten took a turn into the worst. She started attacking people with no provocation. I got bit, some of my family members were both scratched and bit.

We'd already called our vet and he'd made an appointment for us, and we preemptively called the rescue where we'd adopted our last two. That was when it came to light. The lady there asked if the kitten had a scar across her nose, and we said yes. She said that she'd adopted that cat out about five times, but soon after getting in each home, she went from sweet and loving to a ball of claws and teeth.

The kitten is currently on its way back to town. The lady does her best for all of the cats she adopts out, but I have no idea what's going to happen with this one.

The man I call "Dad" (note: he's not my bio-dad, but he is my brother and sister's, and my mom's first husband) thought he had pneumonia or something last week, and mom took him to the ER. The doctor was looking him over and was like "You know, you have this big lump on your throat..."

Dad said yeah, he knew, and he had had it for 2-3 years. Never got it checked out, etc.

The doctor said he suggested Dad get it checked out by his regular doctor as soon as possible. Dad made an appointment for yesterday.

Mom called me last night, and said Dad was in the hospital, prepping for surgery this morning. They were 90% sure it was a tumor, and likely cancerous. He'll be in the hospital for 3-4 days and they're giving him a trach.

He went into surgery at 8 AM Indiana time. By 10:15, Mom called again. The surgeon had come to talk to them to give them the news.

It is stage 4 throat cancer.

Best case scenario if he does chemo, radiation, and stops drinking and smoking completely (not likely) is up to five years.

Worst case scenario is 1-2 years.

This is hitting me exceptionally hard. I've known the man for 8 years. We've had a million arguments. He calls me "little one" every time he talks to me. He's the closest thing to a real father relationship I've had.

I haven't cried yet, but it's coming. I can feel it, like a bubble in my chest, rising up a little more with every breath. I think I'm waiting for Nyrs to be home so we can cry together, honestly.

It hurts, and I'd like reality to just fuck off for a while. So if I'm not around much? Please understand that I'm trying to wrap my head around this right now. I'll try to return to normal functioning as quickly as possible. No promises though. This has shaken me much more than I expected.

Pumpkin soup with cheese roll.

Hi!
I often come into this community and with pleasure look through recipes. I want to offer the recipe of my favourite soup. It is very tasty soup! The Surprising combination of a gentle pumpkin and sharp roll with cheese.
I hope, it will be pleasant to you.
(I beg your pardon for my not very good English.)

For soup:
900 g - a pumpkin, 1 large bulb, Cream - 150-200 ml, salt, black ground pepper, lemon juice - 1 soup spoon, soya sauce - 1 soup spoon, grated thin skin of a lemon - 1 soup spoon , a parsley for an ornament.

From a pumpkin and onions remove a peel. Vegetables cut on the most parts, put in saucepan, fill in with water and cook to softness.
Of a ready pumpkin make mashed potatoes. The onions can be thrown out, it is not necessary to us any more. Mashed potatoes shift back in a pan, to add 1 small cup of our broth, cream, pepper, add grated thin skin of a lemon, juice of lemon, soya sauce, salt (if necessary). Soup strongly heat up, but do not lead up to boiling. Voilà, all is ready!

Fill plates with soup, decorate with rolls with cheese, leaves of parsley and strew a paprika pinch.

For roll:
1 Unleavened wheat cake (here such http://i034.radikal.ru/0805/26/50c2e353160a.jpg) (or tortilla), 150 g grated cheese, sharp red pepper, parsley bunch (finely cut).

Unleavened wheat cake strew grated cheese. Generously, but moderately strew sharp red pepper, strew a parsley. To make a dense roll. The roll wrap up in a foil. To bake in a hot oven of 15 minutes. Cut the ready roll and add in soup.

Enjoy! :)

Explanation: I have been trying to convince two of my friends (one has no cooking skills and one wants me to teach him how to cook) to come over so we can make dinner and watch a movie. They weren't having it. Then, out of the blue I got a text from one of them asking if they could come over to make cookies or brownies.

Question: What is your favorite cookie or brownie recipe?

Restrictions: I am dealing with 2 boys (21 years old). They're a little picky and as I said, I'm teaching them how to make this so something fairly simple would be great. I don't can't have gluten, so if the recipe can be easily adaptable (so I can make a small batch for me) that's great, however that isn't very important.

Thank you!!

FireHorse [userpic]
yogurt flavoring + sour cream
by FireHorse ([info]firehorse)
at December 9th, 2009 (09:03 am)

I finally feel like I've mastered yogurt. I've got a culture I like and get a consistent batch every time. Now I'd like to start adding flavor, especially vanilla and lemon. My question is when do I add it-during the heating-the-milk phase, after I've stirred the culture in, or after it's yogurt? If it makes a difference, I've got vanilla extract, vanilla bean goo and empty vanilla beans (currently flavoring raw sugar for cookies, but I could sacrifice one for the cause). Also, any ideas on what I should use for lemon flavoring? Lemon juice would just curdle it and any lemon flavoring I've tried is fake tasting, like lemon Pledge. I'm open to suggestions, even if it starts with 'zest X lemons...'.

On a related note, can I make sour cream the same way-use a culture and cream and let nature take its course? I googled and got both 'no, it's all pasteurized' and 'yes, but it's difficult', but no instructions.

The Ninja Made a Movement [userpic]
Using leftover pickle juice for onions
by The Ninja Made a Movement ([info]ugotogal)
at December 9th, 2009 (12:15 am)

I've been reading about pickled onions online. One suggestion is to peel and clean pearl onions and simply put them in a jar of leftover pickle juice. Apparently, after a week or so, the onions absorb the flavor of the pickle juice.

Sounds okay to me.

What I'm wondering is if I need to boil the onions at all before I put them in the juice.

I can't find a definitive answer.

Do I clean and peel them and pop them in the jar?

Do I boil them for a bit?

Do I boil them in saltwater?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've got a couple jars of sweet pickle juice in the fridge just begging for onions.

Thanks!

Hi all!

On Saturday I am attending a get together where we have to each bring 2 dishes (enough for about 15 people) and a bottle of wine. The instructions were for something sweet and something savory, but I think I can be flexible on that. Give me your best suggestions or recipes and suggestions for accompanying wine. (I'd prefer a bottle that is under $20.00).

Anything and everything, but I'd prefer nothing containing seafood as I know one girl attending does not like anything from the sea!

Thanks in advance,

Baked Potato Soup

We're currently looking at a big snowstorm coming tonight and tomorrow where I live, so how better to take the chill off than with some potato soup? The "baked" is kind of a misnomer, since you don't bake the potatoes but boil them, but it's what my family has always called this soup.

Baked Potato Soup

-2 large baking potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
-3 cups milk
-1 tsp. salt
-1/2 head cauliflower, chopped
-1 bunch green onions, chopped (keep green and white parts separate)
-1/4 cup sour cream
-1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
-4 slices bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled
-salt and pepper to taste

In soup pot, combine potatoes, 2 cups milk, and 1 tsp. salt. Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Lower the heat to medium-low and add cauliflower and onion whites. Cover again and simmer until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Stir in 1 cup milk and the sour cream. Puree in a blender until mostly smooth. Return to soup pot. Stir in the onion greens, shredded cheese, bacon. Season with salt and pepper.

I posted this one up at my blog today and thought to share it here too:

Adapted from The New Moosewood Cookbook

Ingredients:
1 c. cornmeal
1 c. unbleached flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt (I used a dash)
1 c. yogurt (I used Trader Joe’s European style organic plain yogurt, but vanilla or honey will do)
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar (alternative: honey)
3 TBS melted butter/margarine
2 c. fresh/frozen blueberries (I used both and never measured, honestly)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F
Grease an 8-inch square pan with butter/margarine
Combine the dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl
Combine the wet ingredients (including sugar or honey) in a separate bowl
Stir the wet ingredients into the dry, mixing just enough to combine
Fold in the blueberries
Spread mix into the pan
Bake for 20 minutes OR until the center is firm to the touch and a knife/toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature
Add some melted butter and honey for a truly decadent treat!

This was delicious! Highly recommended :)

current mood: full

Freezing mist and drizzle this morning has given way to weakly optimistic sunshine on the tail end of this day. Funny that 2:00 PM feels like the tail-end of the day. Oh, short short December days!

The Decemberitis in the office it palpable. I love this time of year at work. The scrambling to get things done by year-end in between all the food, the goofing off, the jokes, the general goodwill.

Christmas is up at our house. I think the tree is the prettiest one yet. I really, really do. So many lights, so many ornaments and memories. Nicole bought a new star for the top of the tree this year to replace the stained glass tree-topper we bought together on our first Christmas together in the apartment we shared. I was a little reluctant to leave it packed away this year because, hey – that’s our star! But the one on our tree this year is so shiny and pretty and the light at the top really does make a difference. I’m glad the traditionalist in me was able to let the star change – I definitely like this one better. (But it was gratifying that this one is no easier to put on the tree than the old one! Star tree toppers are a challenge!)

Nicole’s Christmas village that we started last year has undergone a major economic boom. I will have to take some pictures like I did last year. She’s added a barn, a new house, a crab shack, a Christmas tree stand and decorating shop, a bakery, and … there was something else, I thought…. Ah well. Suffice it to say it takes up three shelves this year and she is super proud of it (ridiculously cute!).

I’m looking forward to a quiet evening at home with my love in the light of the Christmas tree after we run out to get gifts for the Sponsor a Senior we are doing this year. So many people forget the elderly at Christmas – I love that they have a program here to adopt a Senior Angel for the season.

current song: Duffy, "Mercy."

Well, it's finally started: Rosemary and Rue is now showing up, with some regularity, on the various pirate sites. (No, I won't link to them, and no, those torrents don't stay up for very long; as soon as I find out about them, I report them to my publisher, who has them taken down.) I find this somewhat upsetting. Not because I hate the Internet. Not because I think that books should only be available to the wealthy. But because, at the end of the day, pirated books are really, really bad for my career.

Multiple studies have been done on the people who pirate music, and they've found that, on average, people who pirate buy more music than people who don't. That makes sense, if you stop and think about it, because music has a very high replay value. I discovered one of my favorite bands, We're About 9, when my friend Merav gave me a mix tape—the oldest form of music piracy—with one of their songs on it: I've since purchased several albums, including the one with that original song. I don't tend to listen to the full albums very often, but every time the individual tracks come up in my iTunes shuffle, I remember that I want to buy more music by these authors. It's music piracy as a form of private radio, and most people—not all, but most—understand that if you want to keep hearing things you like on the radio, you need to support the artists.

Just about everyone I know has at least a few pirated songs. I recently acquired a pirated copy of Freddy's Greatest Hits, a parody album featuring none other than Freddy Kreuger himself. It's been out of print for twenty years. I do not feel any shame about listening to this rare treasure from the horror graveyard...although I'll definitely buy the actual album, if I ever find it.

Book piracy is different, because the way people interact with the media is so different. According to my iPod, I've listened to the Glee cover of "Don't Stop Believing" over two hundred times. Two hundred times. Of course I paid for it. That song is part of the soundtrack of my life now. Looking at my bookshelves, the single book I've probably read and re-read the most times is Stephen King's IT, where I lost track at eighty. I'm a dedicated re-reader. I re-read IT at least once a year, and frequently more often than that. And I'm only up to eighty. Many people don't re-read the way I do, and very few people re-read immediately. So if I download a torrent of the new Ikeamancer novel, I'm pretty unlikely to run right out and buy myself a copy...and if I want to re-read the book six months later, I may just dig the file out of my hard drive, because it's there. Never underestimate the power of instant gratification.

Past experience tells me that this is the point where someone says "Does that mean you hate libraries/people who loan their books to friends/used book stores?", and the answer to all these things is the same: No. In all of these cases, someone has bought the book. In the case of libraries, the number of copies purchased by a given branch is determined by the number of people who request the book, or check it out once it's in the system. Yes, ten or twenty people may get to read a single copy, but with a pirated book, that number is a lot higher, and that initial sale may not have happened. If I loan a book to a friend, the book comes with a high recommendation ("Here, read this"), and even if my friend doesn't buy their own copy, we're looking at one sale for two people, not one sale (or one OCR of a library copy) for some unlimited number. Even used bookstores are limited by the size of the print run, since they can't get more copies than were initially sold, and are thus a vital part of building the readership for ongoing series. They're part of the natural ecosystem.

People complain about how slow some publishers are to adapt the e-book format, but honestly, the concerns over piracy are a really, really big deal, just because of the impact it can have on a book's overall sales—especially for a beginning author. No, I'm not saying that best-selling authors somehow "deserve" to be pirated, but piracy is likely to be a much smaller overall part of the book's footprint. Dan Brown is not going to be told not to write another sequel to The DaVinci Code over piracy. The author of the Ikeamancer books...might.

Publishing is changing. E-books are, and will continue to be, a big part of that. But unless people remember that book piracy isn't exactly the same as music piracy (and hence culturally viewed as "try before you buy," but almost always leading to that eventual purchase), they'll also continue to be a problem.

I knew there were some downright odd places to find merch for this series, and I knew Toys R Us was one of them. But I kept faith as I walked in today, noting a little stand of posters near the entrance with not much more than an eye roll. But that store is mean and scatters the merch all over so it follows you through the sections. Try walking through a bunch of cute baby items, wondering "What little cousin would like this for a gift?", and then seeing rape-face eyes glaring at you. Horror. Pure horror.

(Sorry if any of you are sick of merch complaints, but that just started to disturb me after a while. I was incredibly tempted to tell an employee walking by that I found that stuff a scary addition to their otherwise nice store.)

I have a female Netherland Dwarf named Signy. I don't know how old she is exactly, but I got her in September and she was pretty tiny so I'm guessing she's around 5-6 months?

Anyway, she's always been really good about using her litter box and she never really left any droppings outside of her cage.

I went out of town for a few days for Thanksgiving, and ever since then she leaves droppings EVERYWHERE.
I'd really like to stop this, if possible.

Any advice?

Revision Tip #9 - My Kingdom for a Verb
by Laurie Halse Anderson ([info]halseanderson)
at December 9th, 2009 (01:06 pm)

Does your draft have dialog that goes on for pages? Feels like a screenplay more than a novel?

You (or more accurately) your characters need some action: Verbs, my friends. You are in need of verbs.

Step 1: Choose a dialog-heavy scene.

Step 2: Brainstorm abut what kinds of actions the characters might be doing while they are having this conversation. F. ex., mom and son arguing at the grocery store about if he can borrow the car Friday night. Potential actions: picking out groceries (be specific!), checking labels, returning groceries to shelf (possibility for character development! Does this character go to the trouble of returning item where it belongs or not?), smelling squeezing, poking. More character development: are items neatly stacked in cart, or thrown in?

Step 3: Insert actions into dialog.

Step 4: See where you can trim dialog by allowing characters' actions to speak louder than their words.

Can Tampons prevent menstrual cramps?

Hey VP!

So I have a weird question:

I have endometriosis (I like how Firefox spellcheck doesn't think that is a word btw.)

I am on the second day of my period, which is usually the heaviest and most painful day. I do take HBC so the cramps aren't hospital-worthy, but still pretty intense.

I typically wear a tampon throughout the day and then pads at night, however, today I ran out of tampons and since I am off today I thought I would just wear pads until later when I can go out and go get more tampons.

As soon as I took my last tampon out, the cramps I was already having went from mild to OMG OW almost immediately. I have noticed this phenomenon before, but never really thought about it much.

Could it be that having a tampon in actually makes cramps less intense? And if so, how?

Anyone have this happen to them?

1. unspecified location on Maryland's eastern shore, most people earn money by fishing or by taking tourists out to go fishing/hunting
2. totally made up universe, but fairly similar to most modern Western countries in terms of mobility and differences between rural and urban areas (higher mobility and transience in urban areas), coincidentally also a town where the economy is mostly around fishing, but no tourism

Basically what I want to know is, how big can a population get and still have everyone know everyone else at least by sight (perhaps just "that's one of the Smith children")? And of course, the flip side of that is, being able to know that someone is not a local even if they're not giving off any non-local vibes--you don't recognize them, ergo they must be from someplace else.

In both cases, the same people are living there for generations, with very few people moving in, and some people moving away.

As far as the eastern shore question goes, I've looked at a map and found several locations that might fit between 800 and 1000 in population, and from what I've read, although there is a significant amount of tourism, there's not a lot of moving in and out of these areas--most people who live there grew up there. Would people in a town of this size instantly know that someone wasn't from the town?

My gut instinct is yes, but on the other hand, my high school was about 800 students, and I didn't know everyone there by sight--not even close. I didn't even know everybody in my grade. I'm finding it difficult to conceptualize what the difference is between a city of 100k and a city of 200k, let alone what the difference is between a town of 500 and a town of 1000. Taking two places near where I grew up, I would have guessed that Easton and Bethlehem were about the same in population--turns out that Bethlehem is almost 3x the size of Easton, 70k to 25k. So trying to set population numbers for places always feels like a game of Wild Mass Guess to me.

Ideally I'd like to hear from people who grew up in towns where "everyone knew everyone by sight", and what the population was of your area. It doesn't really matter where in the world you are from because like I said one of the stories is set in a different universe.

As far as Googling and looking things up, I have asked some people who have visited the eastern shore what they thought of the communities. I have tried to look up populations for places near where I grew up and where I live now, figuring that I would be able to say "Oh, so a place with X people is like Z", but like I said, I'm quickly realizing that the size that I think places are in my head bears no resemblance to reality. Easton and Bethlehem feel so similar to me that I just assumed they had similar populations, but it's not even close. On the other hand, Allentown feels a lot larger, and while it is larger, it's closer in size to Bethlehem than Bethlehem is to Easton.

tl;dr I'm going to have characters say things along the lines of "I grew up in a town of X people and back there everyone knows you and your mom and your little dog too" and have the number X be reasonable. Would this be reasonable in a town of 800ish?

Looking for a fic for a friend

One of my friends is looking for a fic and I'm hoping you guys can help her out. She says it was written before Deathly Hollows, but is set after the war is over. Harry goes to America, basically to get away. He has minimal, if any contact with his friends. Draco goes into hiding -- with Hermonie's parents, so he is relatively close with Hermonie.

Ron, Hermonie, and I would suppose Draco decide to rebuild Hogwarts as it was destroyed in the war. They enlist Harry's help and he comes back. There are booby-traps all over the school and Harry and Draco set about trying to undo them. The find out that their magic is really, really compatible, but they aren't together yet.

Both boys are gay. Harry has a boyfriend named Sunday. In one particular scene Draco is wearing lilac robes, both ears pierced, and multiple rings; he says something about being gay and Harry is surprised. Draco looks at himself and retorts, "Did I miss a stereotype somewhere?"

Help?

I had an old co-worker who would bake oodles of cookies just after Thanksgiving, put them into plastic storage containers, and pop 'em in the freezer to be distributed throughout the next month, and still enjoy them even into January.

I have a cookie swap next week and would love to bake all of my cookies for that and Christmas this weekend. Does anyone else freeze already-baked cookies with good results? I know if I bake this weekend they'll be stale in 2 weeks, but will they taste freezer-y if frozen? Thoughts?

Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo side effects
by tabitha <3 renee ([info]tabby_renee)

I just finished my first pack of BCP (Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo). Alright, there is two pills left in the pack, but since I assume they are placebo pills, whatever. An important thing for this entry is that I have general anxiety and get paranoid a little bit after going through some abuse in my past.

Last month, before I decided to get BCP, I missed a period and had a pregnancy scare. I had a period the month before, and it was generally okay, with cramps I could deal with, hot fashes every now and then, and some headaches and exhaustion. The usual, for me.

This month, the symptoms seem to be about 5x worse than without BCP. I couldn't sleep last night because I had a hot flash every 5 minutes, had a major migraine that Tylenol couldn't do anything with, and my cramps made me very nauseous. Also, my anxiety was way high, and I was slightly paranoid.

I'm thinking I need to check out other BCP, but I'm not sure. Maybe my body is getting used to this BCP?

I was on BCP on and off since I was 14. I haven't taken any for almost exactly a year, though.

What do you recommend? Has any one else been through this?

Three somewhat related rants.

1) To the fourteen year old whose comment has now been deleted,

Are you completely stupid? Why would you openly admit to being fourteen in your comment to one of my most graphic fics? Shouldn't your first clue have been that you couldn't access that fic while logged in? (Does LJ block underaged users from entries labelled as containing adult concepts or explicit content?) I know that you would have had to identify yourself as over eighteen to come in while logged off. Are you trying to get me, as well as yourself, in trouble?

2) To the 'mother' who PMed me,

I'm sorry your underaged daughter was reading my fics. You didn't say which fic, but you did say it was 'horrible' and 'disgusting' and completely unsuited to a minor. Believe me, I'm aware of that. I've taken every step I can, short of making my fic journal friends only, to deny minors access to my smut fics. It's not my fault that they keep lying to get to them. Maybe you should examine what your child is doing online, rather than blow up at someone who is on the other side of the Atlantic from you, if not even further away.

3) To the next person who complains about content, minors with access and anything else,

READ THE FUCKING DISCLAIMER AND INTRODUCTION POST!!! It's there for a reason. *points at above rants*

Sound in KMPlayer

My computer crashed, so I had to download KMPlayer again. I don't like the newer versions so I stick with the older ones, but when I downloaded it and began to play my DVD the sound was off. And what I mean by off is that the background music and sounds is louder than the people talking. How can I fix this?

Hunting for Fashion Design, Patternmaking, etc links
by Annie Jackson ([info]anniejackson)
at December 9th, 2009 (04:35 pm)

Hi everyone! I am on the hunt for great fashion design, patternmaking, tailoring, etc type links to add to the Fashion Students Online link directory. I really hope to build this directory into a fabulous resource. There are some great link resource sites already, I know, such as costume.org but they do not cover the topics we hope to cover (schools, manufacturers, freelancers, tutorials, suppliers, and more).

If you have only a few links that you would like to submit you can do so at this address:
http://www.fashionstudentsonline.com/submit-a-link

If however you have ten or more links to submit we have just set up a new multi-link submission page:
http://www.fashionstudentsonline.com/multiple-links

We even accept exported favourites / bookmark files from your browser!
Just export your bookmarks out of your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc) and send the file to us and we will do the sorting and adding. It couldn't be easier!

This message has been x-posted to advanced_sewing, corset_makers, sew_hip, and craftgrrl

Thank you!

I'm actually not ranting about 6 this time

Hi 9 author.

Y'know, call me crazy but when you've got the group facing down a horde of bloodthirsty machines, it seems like it'd be a bad idea to have 7 sedated. She's the group's designated warrior and kicks the most ass out of all of them. Why would you have them knock her out? For her protection? Seems like it would really defeat the purpose.

Does anyone know what happened to the downloads that were at Illusions of Grandeur could be? I've checked at one of the creator's LJ ([info]me_emma_me) and have contacted her but received no response yet, I've googled and binged and have found many links to websites that are dead.

Pictures of the missing... )

Any help would be appreciated.
