Rosemary and Rue... [Jul. 10th, 2009|03:22 pm]

Well, I think I've put this off as long as I possibly can.

I've finished reading Rosemary and Rue, and the time has come for me to review it.

The problem is? I don't want to share, but I WILL so that everyone else will run out on September 1 and buy it. Because it is FABULOUS.

I ate the book in fits and starts, wanting to devour it all in one gulp, and yet, so enthralled by it that I wanted to make it last forever. I drove my wife nuts. I drove EVERYONE nuts, because I walked around the house holding my ARC and squeeing things like "I don't scare Seanan!" and "I HAVE AN ARC OF ROSEMARY AND RUE! SWOON!" and "I want to be best friends with Toby AND Seanan, please!" amongst other things.

At some point, I sat on the couch, pulled my legs up and started really reading. You all need to understand something. I read fast. I can read 3-5 books a day fairly easily, so when I tell you it took me a week to read it, it means something fairly significant.

When I say I eat books, I no longer mean it quite the way I once did. When I was 11 or 12, I would literally tear the bottom margins of the pages off as I read them and eat the paper. I loved the books so much, I wanted them to be a part of me forever. I eventually realized that they were, even without the destruction. But I digress.

Rosemary and Rue is my latest feast (I swear I didn't eat the pages!). I've actually read very few books since, because October "Toby" Daye has taken hold of my brainmeats and won't let go. I can almost hear her laugh in my head, and I'm so happy I got to meet her. Toby is a woman who is wounded and tough all at once, and her awkwardness in her own skin and the world she's tried to reject and is being forced back into makes me want to hold her hand and walk with her.

I can't say enough about Toby-but the thing is, I don't want to tell you anything that might give things away. But know that I love her, and I can't wait to be a part of her next adventure. And I want all of you with us.

But first, you have to come along on this one.

As for the technical aspects? Seanan creates a world that fits so well with ours that mentioning places to Kyla (who lived in Union City, CA for several years) made her squee with delight. She kept saying "Oh, I love her. I love her. She and Tanya Huff, I swear!" That's a big compliment from her. Tanya Huff has always had a very high place in Kyla's world.

The book is lyrical without being overt about it, gritty and heartbreaking in ways I can't quite put into words (this is a common theme lately), and holds something deep inside that resonates deep in your core for long after you've put it down and tried to move on to something else.

I want more of Toby, and thank god, DAW figured people would, because we're promised more of the changeling next year! A world without Toby would be far duller.

Rosemary and Rue, the first book in the October "Toby" Daye series by Seanan McGuire arrives from DAW on September 1, 2009. Pre-order from Amazon or request it from your favorite bookseller. Buy copies for all of your friends.
